For Europeans I make out the percentage as 23%. If anything I have erred in making it too little. For Portuguese it would be about the same, but for Chinese more say 30% owing to
their diet and change of costume.
I attach China Mail Market lists for corresponding
dates in 1902 and 1912. In 1902 the average value of the dollar was about 1/8).
I attach a specimen monthly bill showing how I obtained the above percentage. I have exa ined several individual accounts to obtain the relative sums paid for the different class-
-es of commodities.
